In early 2016, Brixton BID secured funding from the Mayor of London to carry out a green infrastructure audit as part of the Mayor’s Greening the BIDs programme.
The audit has enabled Brixton BID to assess the quantity/quality of greening in the area and highlighted a number of opportunities to incorporate more planting and green spaces across Brixton. The Brixton BID Green Infrastructure Audit provides an overview of existing greenery in the Brixton area and sets out some ideas of how much more greening can be incorporated, such as rain gardens, green walls, and planting schemes into the urban landscape.
Greening is good for business, as it makes Brixton a more attractive area to visit and work in and also helps the town centre to be more resilient to extreme weather events and, in fact, helping to preserve economic stability.
Amongst the other benefits, green infrastructure improves air quality by trapping pollutants and increasing wellbeing. Brixton BID is keen to ensure that these benefits of urban greening are delivered into the BID area. The audit is the first step of this process and will act as a strategic document to attract further green investment into Brixton.
